Is the Vestry Calling You?

ImageWhy would a card-carrying AARP member who is also a busy mother and grandmother of two-and already an active member in several St. David's ministries-decide to run for the vestry?

Karen Carter chose to be nominated, she said, because “I thought service on the vestry would be a challenging, thought-provoking experience that would allow me to contribute more to St. David's. The benefit of helping me progress in my own spiritual journey was also deeply motivating."

If you are considering the vestry, your time and ways in which you participate may vary. Participation means attending monthly meetings and occasional special sessions, as well as planning and implementing special projects. As an example, Karen’s vestry activities included co-chairing the Task Force on Traditional Worship, chairing the committee to recognize Jim Tracy for all of his work for St. David's, working with the group to develop the Hopeful Future Campaign, Finance Committee and a few ministry-plan subcommittees. Her work with altar guild, lay readers and money-counting began before her vestry term and will continue after her term expires.

Karen adds, "As with all adventures, some things will go more smoothly than others. Other things are only accomplished by discernment, hard work and good old common sense. But it is the final result after working through difficult issues that brings a joyous sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that YOU helped to shape the future of our Parish for years and years to come."

We need five people who will step up to the challenge of becoming a vestry member. Pray thoughtfully, talk to past and present vestry members and your family. Jump in the boat! You will join a team of enthusiastic rowers who will support one another and help enrich our parish life here at St. David’s.
