Vacation Bible School 2009

The first person that came to mind when preparing this article was Victoria Krahulec. Victoria has been one of the co-organizers for our annual summer VBS for the past four years and has worked as a volunteer for seven. She is a veritable font of information about where we’ve been and where we’re going with VBS at St. David’s. In years past, she has helped our kids explore the arctic tundra (Arctic Edge), play a variety of sports (Game Day Central) and tour the tropics (Outrigger Island).

This year’s camp is called “Camp E.D.G.E.: Experience + Discover God Everywhere.” Registration for St. David’s parishioners will begin on May 17, and VBS will take place July 14-17. The program is open to children ages 4 to 11 and costs $45 per child*. This will be the best bargain you’ll get all summer, mostly due to the fact that it’s operated entirely by an army of volunteers from the church and preschool. The children are divided by age (rising preschoolers, kindergartners, 1st and 2nd graders, 3rd and 4th graders, and 5th and 6th graders) and are then placed in a small group of four to six children. The groups rotate through the various daily activities. This year, each day will have it’s own bible story and verse according to the following themes:

  • God Is with Me—I Will Stay Close to God
  • God Guides Me—I Will Follow
  • God Teaches Me—I Will Learn
  • God Loves Me—I Will Love God and Others
  • God Sends Me—I Will Go

Each day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with Opening Worship in the sanctuary after which the groups will spend about 40 minutes each in Bible Study, Art & Crafts, Games & Recreation, and Music. For each of these activities, they will travel to different stations in the Narthex, Adult Ed room, the Preschool, and an outdoor tent (weather permitting). Children are to be picked up from the sanctuary at 12:30 p.m.

When asked why she continues to volunteer year after year to help make VBS possible (a job that starts in January of each year), Victoria says, “It’s exciting. I like to see the kids having fun.” She’s a planner by nature, and her job is to help choose the theme, order all the supplies and organize all the kid’s groups and their leaders. Other volunteers include Suzy Nathan, who is responsible for the registration process, and Karen Knox, who does the teacher training. The Reed family, as always, is in charge of decorating, music and drama. Of course, they will all be there with bells on throughout the week, along with all the other adult and youth volunteers that help make VBS a reality. The week will culminate on Friday with a brief presentation of the songs they learned during the week, which they’ll do again at the Sunday services. Donations of giftcards for snacks and arts & crafts supplies, as always, will be gratefully accepted. We look forward to seeing you this summer at Camp E.D.G.E.!
