Today it feels ever more important to ask how we can respond to God’s call to serve. How can a small covenant community begin to address the challenges of a world that at times seems so lacking in hope? St. David’s has answered this call for the last seven years with its annual mission trip to El Hogar de Amour y Esperanza, or “The Home of Love and Hope,” in Honduras. El Hogar is a boarding school for orphaned and impoverished boys, housing 80-85. In 2007, El Hogar also established a smaller girls’ program, renting a house for eight girls and their caretakers. This year, St. David’s team - comprised of some seasoned missionaries and others on their first mission trip - are: Andy Bluhm, Jan Carson, Richard Decker, Terri DeSimone, Christopher Gegenheimer, Clint Hanback, Jerry Hayes, Elaine Jurek, Michael Perales and Allison Weitzel. The group will leave bright and early Saturday morning, Feb. 28, and fly into the capital city of Tegucigalpa. From there, their El Hogar hosts will transport the team and their many suitcases stuffed with school and medical supplies, clothing, shoes, games and toys for the children. In the past six years, St. David’s teams have helped transform a summer home into a thriving, state-of-the-art technical campus that provides the boys their choice of a trade in carpentry, metal-working, electronics and auto mechanics. This year, the team will remain and continue work on rebuilding the dormitories at El Hogar, rather than traveling nearby to St. Mary’s Technical School in Ameriteca, as the work at St. Mary’s has been completed. The group will spend their nights in play with the children, celebrating evening devotionals in the guest quarters and building relationships among its team members. Interested in mission work? Talk to any of the El Hogar missionaries and they will share the reasons why they go. Important Dates: Feb. 21 - The team will meet to pack suitcases with the items collected for El Hogar. If you can help, contact Jerry Hayes at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Feb. 22 – The parish will commission the team during the 9 and 10:45 a.m. services. March 7 – The team returns home to Dulles Airport (American Airlines Flight # 850 at 10:45 p.m.). Parishioners are encouraged to meet the flight and welcome them home. March 21 – Post-trip celebration dinner at St. David’s with slide show presentation, music and testimonials from the team members. Their stories will inspire you. The following was written by a team member on the 2005 trip, and beautifully captures the experience of El Hogar.
