In a well known parable, Jesus tells the story of a shepherd who separates the sheep and the goats from his mingled flock. Sheep come to represent faithful disciples of Jesus who cared for others. Goats represent unfaithful disciples who failed to care for others. Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me. . . . inasmuch as you did this to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” From this parable rises the church’s commitment to care for others. Our hope is to meet every human need. But Jesus also said, “The poor you will have with you always.” The needs of the world are so great our hope most go unfulfilled unless moderated by wisdom. The primary question we face in response to the great needs of the world is to discern what small part of the world’s need we believe the Lord is calling us to address?
