November 2: Annual Candy Tithe

ImageThis Sunday, November 2, is this church's annual Candy Tithe. Please encourage your children to bring in 10 percent of the bounty of candy they receive on Halloween to give up to the Lord. During the service the Rector will ask the children to place their candy, the "first fruits," on the altar. The candy will then be donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief.

This is a wonderful way to teach children about tithing. Last year, the Rector shared how he and his son, Jonathan, counted out his Halloween candy. For every 10 pieces of candy they counted, Jonathan put one aside for the Lord. It may seem to the children that parents are asking a lot of them. Giving away something of value to us is not always easy!

Once they have counted out their candy and set aside 10 percent for the Lord, children may be amazed at the abundance of candy left in their own pile compared to that set aside to tithe. Who knows, perhaps they will be inspired to give more. Last year the altar at the church was piled high with candy. It showed the overwhelming generosity of our children, and surely gave each child a sense of pride in sharing something of theirs with the Lord. Please join your fellow parishioners in the church's Candy Tithe this Sunday, November 2, at both services.
