Daniel J. Miller has been appointed Organist and Music Director at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Ashburn, Virginia, beginning August 7, 2011. In addition to his work at St. David’s, Dan is currently a staff accompanist at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV, and accompanist for Hagerstown Choral Arts. He has many years of experience as a church musician, serving United Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Episcopal churches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia. At Shepherd, Dan accompanies student recitals and departmental programs as well as the Masterworks Chorale. He also is active as a freelance accompanist and vocal coach throughout the area, accompanying vocalists and instrumentalists for recitals, auditions, and competitions.

Dan’s musical education began in his hometown of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and continued at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, from which he received a Bachelor of Music Education degree in organ/choral music. Mr. Miller returned to Shenandoah for graduate study, earning two Master of Music degrees in Church Music (organ) and Piano Accompanying. He also held a graduate assistantship in piano accompanying, serving as accompanist for the Opera Workshop program.

Dan is active as a collaborative artist throughout the Washington region. Most recently, he performed as pianist with the Hub Opera Ensemble in Mozart’s “Cosi fan tutte”, and was on the faculty of the Washington National Opera’s Opera Institute at American University as a coach/accompanist for his third season. He has also worked with the Loudoun Lyric Opera and with Opera Leesburg for a production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”. At Shenandoah, Dan served for three years as accompanist for the Opera Workshop as rehearsal pianist for “Gianni Schicchi”, and as an accompanist for numerous student recitals. As a choral accompanist, he has worked with the Capitol Hill Chorale, the Washington Women’s Chorus, City Choir of Washington, and the McLean Choral Society. Dan also enjoys performing as harpsichordist with two early music ensembles, Winchester Baroque Ensemble and Fanfare-Barok, which specialize in performing period music on period instruments.

Before coming to St. David’s, Dan served as Organist and Choir Director at Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville for 5 years. He is a member of St. Paul’s on the Hill in Winchester, where he was confirmed in 2004.
