Covenant Community Faces Serious Challenge
Written by Staff

The legacy of the mortgage on the current church building presents a serious challenge to this Covenant Community.  That was the message of the Rector in his annual report on January 27.

Growth of Ministry
“There is much to celebrate,” the Rector said.  “The new 9:15 Service has brought many families into this Community.

“Along with the increased commitment to our Youth Ministry, we are becoming a community of joy and faith that spans the generations.

“Many families have increased their commitment to this Covenant Community,” the Rector added.  “Over 100 families increased their financial pledge over 40% this year.

Challenge of Ministry
“The challenge to the Parish’s shared ministry continues to be the cost of the mortgage on the sanctuary,” the Rector continued.

Church Treasurer Brad Rush reported that in 2008, expenses are expected to exceed revenues by nearly $170,000.  Only by drawing on the rest of the Vestry-approved loan will the 2008 budget be balanced.

In addition to presenting the 2008 Budget, the Treasure presented a projection of a 2009 Budget. Assuming a 20 percent increase in revenue for 2009, the deficit for that year is expected to be almost $125,000.  And there will be no more cash reserves to draw on.

After personnel costs, the biggest expense is the cost of maintaining the property, mostly through the mortgage by which the construction of the current church building was financed.

Investment in Leadership
“For this Covenant Community to exercise an effective ministry, we need an effective staff to help parishioners exercise leadership in ministry,” the Rector said.

Jim Tracy has donated his services as General Manager for many.  Jim Tracy plans to retire at the end of 2008.  In 2009 it may be necessary to pay someone for that job.

It has already become necessary to reduce the Communications Director position to half-time, and to let go of the Lay Ministry Director.

New Commitments Necessary
Looking at the nearly 200 people in the Church, the Rector said, “I see here those who have committed themselves financially to this community.  I appreciate your commitment and your faithfulness.”

“The Vestry will have a very difficult decision to make in 2008.  On May 28, 2008 I will ask the Vestry for a plan that will determine the future of this parish.  Please pay close attention and participate in the discussion as the Vestry seeks to discern how we move forward together in ministry.

“To continue ministry in this place requires people to discover in this community a place where no stands alone, and where we are all learning to love one another, as we learn to be loved by Jesus.

“Every Sunday, I encourage you to look for the people you do not know.  Introduce yourselves, and let them know how welcome they are in this place.” the Rector concluded.
