In the Bible the stewardship begins in the first chapter of the book of Genesis. At the height of the creation, God said, “Let Us make man in our image, according to our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” In granting dominion of the Earth, the Lord does not grant ownership. We are given authority over the earth as managers or trustees. We are created in God’s image to participate in partnership with God in God’s creative intent. We are given a stewardship responsibility in creation. A quick survey of human history suggests humanity is not always faithful in this stewardship responsibility. War decimates societies. The church gathers to be more intentional about our stewardship responsibility. We encourage one another to take the broadest possible view, an eternal view, of our lives. We try to be mindful of our role as trustees of God’s creation, partners in divine blessing. We encourage good stewardship practice by calling one another to commitment to three things: 1. To be present in worship – where we may be reminded weekly of God’s grace and our responsibility to live faithfully in response to God’s blessing. 2. To support our fellow parishioners – where we have the opportunity to recognize the dignity of each of us who are created in God’s image. Although good stewardship practice is not all about money, it certainly includes money. Our worship of God and support of one another satisfies our human longing in ways money never can. We record our commitment to worship, provide mutual support, and provide the material resources of our parish on a commitment card held in trust by the parish office. If you are ready to register your commitment to God and to this parish, you may do so when you receive your commitment card in the mail. |
