Bromley: The Roof has Been Raised

Bromley Mission School is the oldest school for girls in Liberia.

Nearly 14 years of civil war devastated the country of Liberia in West Africa. The war killed over 200,000 people, displaced half a million, and destroyed the country’s fragile economy.

Amid the devastation, Bromley Mission School also suffered greatly. The buildings were not maintained, the school lost many of their educators and the children were not able to attend school. There is still no electricity or running water.

In 2003 the war ended, and Liberians are rebuilding their country and their infrastructure.

In November 2005, five parishioners went to Bromley Mission School in Liberia for a fact finding mission trip.

The first task to be done was to put a roof on the dormitory. The Bromley team from this parish, and one from St. Peter’s, Purcellville, helped raise the money to remove the asbestos roof and replace it with a solid, healthier roof.

In November 2006, a team of five missionaries went to Bromley and witnessed the roof being torn down and rebuilt. The roof was one of several successful Bromley projects undertaken this past year.

The Bromley team is now planning its next trip to Liberia from November 3-12 this year.
