To help young children better understand what happens during communion, Communion classes will be offered at 12 noon, starting March 2, concluding with an instructed Eucharist on March 9. An ancient tradition While that eventually fell out of practice in the Roman Catholic Church in Western Europe, children’s Communion has remained in the Eastern Orthodox Church unchanged. Today, the Book of Common Prayer teaches that Holy Baptism is the only requirement for full membership in the Church. One of the chief expressions of full membership is the receiving of Communion. The Eucharist is Christ's way of uniting us to Himself, which is all the more reason that children, to whom Jesus said the Kingdom of God belongs, should have it. Right understanding David Kendrick recalls when his son, at the age of two, put out his hands to receive communion one Sunday. “I wondered if he was really ready for this,” Kendrick said, “until his eyes lit up and said, ‘I had Jesus Christ!’ Aid to understanding If you would like to bring your child to these classes, please contact Karen Knox,
