The young people of this Covenant Community began “taking it to the streets” on Sunday, March 2 with the launch of the 5 pm LifeQuest.  With rockin’ music, videos and candlelight, people clapped along and heard the Rector speak about our dreams and God’s dreams for us.

As LifeQuest develops, it will be the participants who decide what kind of experience it will be, the Rector emphasized.

“We need the feedback of those who come to Life Quest,” the Rector said.  “This is not a top-down service where the leader brings a message down from the mountain.  I look forward to seeing how the community makes this experience a rich and meaningful opportunity to gather for common prayer. 

Takin’ Church to the Streets
At this first LifeQuest, a rock band sang the Doobie Brothers’ classic “Taking it to the Streets,” in which the singer says,

Take this message to my brother
You will find him everywhere
Wherever people live together
Tied in poverty’s despair

“That’s exactly what Jesus did,” the Rector said.  “He didn’t stay in a big temple and wait for people to come to him.  He went to where the people worked.  Where they skinned smelly fish and worked up a heavy sweat all day. 

Then he said, “I will make you fish for people,” and sent them out into the streets.  If this Covenant Community is going to do what Jesus did, the first step is to bring the Street into the Church.

Not Your Grandmother’s “Service”
As LifeQuest develops, it will not be just a “worship service.”  Like the name implies, it is a quest, a journey in which the Community will explore all parts of their lives.

“For LifeQuest to work, it needs to be an experience of the living God, and that’s not something anyone can program,” the Rector said.

“As we work together, ideas and visions will bubble up from our youth, their dreams, their joys and their disappointments.  And when we ‘get it right,’ then we will know that God is always with us.”
