Holy Week 2008

ImageIn our worship we proclaim Jesus' self-giving love as the definitive expression of the heart of God. No one can deny your worth.  Jesus' sacrifice for you is the measure of your eternal value.

During Holy Week, we dive into that sacrifice, then rise on up as we celebrate his rising from the dead, and the transformation that he promises to each of us.  Please join us for this most meaningful time in the Church year.

Palm Sunday, March 16
Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday.  We will have our regular morning services (8, 9:15 and 10:45).  But at each service, we will all wave palms as the residents of Jerusalem did when Jesus arrived, haling him as their King.

In that service, we will remember his death and crucifixion, which came just days after his triumphal entry.

Maundy Thursday, March 20
In the middle of the week, we will celebrate Maundy Thursday, which comes from the Latin Maundatum, meaning “command.”  At 7:30 pm, we will remember how Jesus gave a new commandment to his disciples, one that sums up the Five Root Values:

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34).

At this simple, quiet service, there will be no foot-washing.

Good Friday, March 21, 7:30 pm
Throughout Lent, the 10:45 Choir has enhanced our worship with selections from John Rutter’s Requiem.  They are preparing to do the same on Good Friday.

The choir is preparing “A Service of Darkness” by Dale Wood which consists of seven choral meditations on the Seven “Last Words” of Jesus, which he said from the Cross.  The music is based on the ancient Christian service of Tenebrae.

Tenebrae dates from the 8th century and was originally celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Holy Week, representing the darkness that fell over the earth when Christ was crucified.

Easter Sunday, March 23
The story of Holy Week does not end in darkness and death.  It ends with joy and new life.

We will celebrate the new life that the risen Jesus offers us on Sunday at our regular morning services.  Please come to the celebration.
