Communion Class for Children
Written by Karen Knox

Elementary school-age children in this Covenant Community now have a better understanding of what happens in the Eucharist.  This comes after a class on Communion that ended with an instructed Eucharist on March 9, Sunday afternoon.

Diane K. Brown and Karen Knox taught the class, while David Kendrick walked the children through a Eucharist, explaining the various parts of the service as it progressed.

When it came time for Communion, Kendrick called the children and their parents to join him around the altar.  After everyone had received Communion, Everybody joined hands around the altar.

“After Communion we thank God for making us ‘living members’ of Jesus Christ,” Kendrick said.

“In this case, ‘member’ means a finger, a toe, an arm and a leg.  So that means we are all fingers and toes of Jesus.  And if we are parts of his Body, then we are all a part of each other,” he concluded.

“It was a great way to make the children feel a part of the service,” said Judith Keiper.

“Having the parents attend the instructional Eucharist was a great way for parents to hear terminology to use with their children moving forward.”

“I was so pleased this class was offered,” said Linda Himler.  “My 8 year old son didn't like taking communion, but he really enjoyed this class.”
