Meeting the Challenges of Parenting
Written by Gil Brady

ImageThe last Thursday of every month, you can find a full education room at the back of the church. Why the crowd?  That’s when parents come together to share their thoughts and ideas on the challenge of parenting.

There is one more opportunitiy for parents to learn from these discussions before a summer break, on May 29th.  The discussion will start at 6:30 pm and end sharp at 7:45.  Child care will also be provided.

Each discussion is unique and valuable.  There is no need to have attended the previous sessions in order to learn from the May discussion.

Two parishioners facilitate these “parenting discussions” -- Jenn Cohen (mother of three and elementary school teacher) and Gil Brady (father of two, former school teacher, and elementary school principal).

Building Your Child’s Capability
Brady and Cohen have utilized the work of H. Stephen Glenn to stimulate the discussions.  Glenn has written two outstanding books: Developing Capable Students and Raising Self-reliant Children in a Self-Indulgent World.

ImageIn his writings, Glenn focuses on the concept of “building capability” in our children.  In January the group discussed the general concept of capability building.

In February, the group discussed the barriers to building capability, as well as “builders” of our childrens’ capability.  In March, the group broke up into small groups and discussed specific situations in the life of parents where the barriers and builders come into play.

In May, the group will discuss the concept of “A Family of Contributors."
