5:00 Service Cancelled

The Rector has canceled the 5:00 PM Service starting this Sunday.

The 5:00 PM Service was begun with funds from outside the parish budget.  The aim was to work in collaboration with the Youth of the parish to create an environment where they could pray together and learn the value of worship.

Following the Vestry "Resolution to a Provide for a Hopeful Future” for this parish, the Rector determined that  continuing to develop the 5:00 PM service was inappropriate at this time.

Parishioner input to the Rector as well as discussion on the SD Life Social Network moved the Vestry to make additonal cuts in the parish budget as part of its solution for the long-term financial instability of the parish.  The Rector believed that in a period of cost-cutting, the parish lacked the resourece to invest in the development of a new liturgy.

"In my experience it takes at least a year to develop a new liturgy," the Rector said.  "Our current 9:15 AM liturgy is modeled on a liturgy developed by my former parish.  It took a year to determine the elements for worship that worked in the lives of young families.  The parish lacks ability to dedicate resources at this time for liturgical experimentation."

An earlier article mistakenly identified the decision to cancel the 5:00 PM liturgy as a Vestry decision.  The Vestry has no authority over the liturgy of the parish.  The decision to cancel the service was the Rector's.

The Vestry is committed to the spiritual formation of youth.  The Resolution To Provide a Hopeful Future includes calling a Task Force to investigate the best practices for youth worship; and recommend ways to meet the spiritual needs of our youth.
