The Preschooler Experience
Age Differences

  • High/Scope Curriculum:  Influenced by the child development theories of Jean Piaget, it is founded on the belief that young children learn best through active learning, children learning by doing.  Learn more about High/Scope at http://www.highscope.com/.
  • Creative Curriculum: Based on the idea of organizing the classroom into interest areas or centers, this curriculum emphasizes the teacher's role in creating and maintaining these areas to facilitate preschoolers' learning. Learn more at http://www.teachingstrategies.com/.
  • NAEYC Developmentally Appropriate Guidelines: The largest professional organization of early chilhood educators, this organization published position statements in the late 1980s to help failing schools being hindered by more formal academic instruction of young children.  NAEYC emphasizes the role of the teacher in supporting children's development and learning, the importance contextually relevant curricula, and the significant role of families in early childhood education.
